gandhi's talisman

Do you remember our NCERT textbooks? They always started out with Gandhi's talisman. When in doubt remember the face of the weakest poorest man and see if your actions will lead to his emancipation or relieve spiritual starvation of millions and you will see your doubts melt away. Now this is not verbatim but you get the gist. So where does this theory leave individualists like me. Isn't it so hard always to act for a greater good. How easy it is to be selfish and how easy it is to escape realities.
Maybe Gandhi's actions involved relieving spiritual starvation for millions because he touched so many lives but I wonder always where someone like me could apply a talisman like this. So to make things easier I want to make a simpler talisman because come on, I can't imagine my selfless actions inside my small apartment relieving the starving millions and I do not want to believe in the philanthropy of handouts and something tells me neither did Gandhi.
So maybe the millions could go down to a number like ten because that's probably the maximum number of people my actions can have an effect on and probably that's the maximum who would take me seriously on my arguments.
Now what can starvation be substituted for. These ten people who I could influence or affect are definitely not literally starving and some could do with a bit of starvation. I would think in the context of my ten people, all they need from me would be empathy. Less than the quota of empathy I generally reserve for them and they are starved emotionally.
Now who is this weak poor person I can recall. Unfortunately there are so many of them. Sometimes I feel one should derive strength from some one who is already strong and to sound cliched but apt has beaten all odds, but then again if that were so easy we wouldn't need a talisman. Therefore a weak person should be remembered at this stage because at the least you can say, "I am slightly better off here".
Here is where we digress a bit from Gandhi. How about deriving strength from the fact that I am not that weak silly person and thus my actions would make me a better person in front of these ten people I care about. So that is my talisman.
It doesn't set out too many high expectations for me but trust me it is still quite difficult to follow. It still allows for some leeway to act selfishly as long as it doesn't affect the immediate ten but it is good enough for personal harmony.
